WP plugin: USCD
April 19th, 2007 Posted in blogging, codeOne of the sites i read on a regular basis is a WordPress blog where some blogs of friends are aggregated via RSS. Although most of these blogs are a lot of fun to read, some may not be ‘your thing’, for example because the main topic is a rather specific technical peculiarity or maybe you don’t like their style of writing. The same could apply for a site that generates a list of the latest news headlines, or even within someones blog where you like most of the posts but are not interested in one or two of the categories. In short, many cases exist where readers would like to be able to customize their view of the content.
This is where my new plugin comes in: USCD. This is short for User Selectable Category Display, which indeed provides users with a way of choosing which categories they would like to see in their view. This can be an option for users who are logged on only, or even for someone simply visiting your site. For registered users this is done by saving their preferences in the metadata field; for regular visitors it works with a yummy cookie containing their choices.
To see this plugin in action you can take a look at my cartoon page. There i’ve made a category per feed supplying the cartoons, thus enabling you to filter out the cartoons you don’t like.
If you want to use the USCD plugin too: simply get the file from the link below, unpack it in your plugin directory, and check the README file.
