Phoneupgrade: Nokia 6120 classic

October 10th, 2007 Posted in gadgets

After 4-5 years of using my old one it was time to get a new phone :) Obviously I did a lot of comparing and doubting, but I finally decided to go for a Nokia 6120 classic. The only downside I’ve found so far is that the model is still so new, which means most sites with phone software haven’t heard of it yet. That’ll probably change within one or two months though so all should be ok in a bit :)

Speaking of software, do you have any tips on apps-I-can’t-be-without?
So far I only have Fring, a mobile putty version and one downloaded theme. Fring works fine for Skype and for SIP, but I’m not over the moon about the messenger services like ICQ and MSN. This is mostly because you can’t view the profile of the person you’re talking to: with those catchy MSN names people use it’s rather hard to keep track of who’s who.

I mostly lack a good IRC client, and something for SSH that allows me to save configured sessions (typing on numberpads is too much of a hassle to do it every single time I want to connect). Do tell me if you know which one would work for me, and about any other cool apps as well :D Btw the phone’s software is Symbian S60 3rd edition ;)

midpssh is quite well-featured and runs fine on my non-symbian series 40 phone (Nokia 6300). For irc, jmIrc is the best I’ve found so far, it has connection profiles and such including support for server passwords, no complaints at all so far.

s60putty does have the ability to store profiles, I only use a modified default-profile, but you can save/load others as well.

For mobile browsing, Opera mini 4 (beta) is unsurpassed in my opinion. Yahoo! Go is nice for browsing news and maps - I recommend having both Yahoo! Go and Google Maps as they have different strengths and weaknesses.
